Chronic pain can be an incredibly debilitating condition, affecting all aspects of a person’s life. Unfortunately, traditional medicine often falls short when it comes to providing adequate relief for those suffering from protracted discomfort. That’s where functional medicine comes in.
How Functional Medicine Helps
Functional medicine looks at the root causes of a patient’s symptoms and seeks to address them through a holistic approach. This includes looking at lifestyle factors like diet and stress, as well as adding alternative treatments such as acupuncture and prolotherapy.
Prolotherapy is a non-invasive injection therapy that creates healthy inflammation in the area of dysfunction, triggering the body’s natural healing process.
Providing an Alternative to Pain
A successful woman came to us after struggling with chronic neck and back pain for years. Despite seeing neurosurgeons and orthopedic specialists and undergoing numerous imaging tests, no one could give her a reason for her discomfort.
Frustrated and desperate for relief, the patient turned to Naprapathy with Dr. Poe, a connective tissue/fascia specialist. After fascia work and Graston technique, Dr. Poe was unhappy with the level of improvement, and suspected a pinched nerve was responsible. She referred the woman to a colleague, who is a holistic MD specializing in various holistic methods, including prolotherapy.
After a series of these therapies and weekly visits with both specialists, the patient experienced a 90% improvement in her pain level, sleep, and overall quality of life. In addition to addressing the physical factors, the practitioners also worked on addressing stress and trauma, as well as supporting her adrenals.
While the patient still experiences occasional episodes of pain, it no longer limits her ability to work, exercise, or enjoy time with her family.
Little Changes Make a Big Difference
As this patient’s story illustrates, small changes can have a monumental impact on a person’s life. Functional medicine practitioners take a whole-person approach to help you heal.

It is always good to know of alternate resources for addressing chronic pain. I have just started getting arthritis in my middle finger on my right hand and in the large knuckle in both of my thumbs. Stretching and movement like swimming, chiropractic adjustments and massage are helping now. If I need more tools when things get painful, I will look into other strategies.
